India Ink Day

Students bring an “unconventional stylus” (fork mascara brush, etc.) to class with them. We discuss students’ experiences with digital drawing versus traditional drawing. Students typically talk about trying to zoom in on the paper to work on detail, or express frustration that they can’t use the “back” button to erase mistakes.

For the first part of class, students use their unconventional stylus to make an abstract composition, experimenting with different mark-making strategies. They are encouraged to embrace accidents. For the second part of class, students create a portrait of a classmate, incorporating marks from their earlier abstract composition.
