Chiaroscuro / Reductive Charcoal Drawing
Students practice developing value through a reductive process with charcoal: they draw a dramatically lit still life, erasing to create highlights. Because many students prefer graphite and are used to developing areas of shadow through an additive process, this approach forces them to analyze value in a more holistic way. They were encouraged to notice and record soft, sharp, and hidden edges.
